While they're certainly good for draining rain water, your home's gutters simultaneously help prevent the onset of rotting in the shingles and underlying support system of the house. In addition, gutters prevent brick discoloration and rotting of wood fascia board and siding.

Gutters are made from numerous types of material and come in many colors with many options to choose from.  Thus, as time passes, it's important to repair or replace your gutters, whether they're seamless aluminum, copper, or galvanized steel.

Here are the types of gutters that are available on the market today:
  • Aluminum gutters- the most common gutter used today and available in many colors. Aluminum gutters are the most common gutter product used today, making up almost 80% of all gutters installed in the United States. There is good reason for this as aluminum gutters do their job great! Aluminum gutter hold more water than traditional wood gutters and do not have some of the disadvantages like other gutter types such as rust; good quality aluminum gutters never rust.  In fact, there are only a few disadvantages to aluminum gutters including tat they could be dented easily.

  • Vinyl gutters- another common gutter known for being easy to install and being resistant to rust. Vinyl gutters are a top gutter choice for homeowners because they have the least disadvantages of any gutter type and some really great features that other gutter types don't have. Some of these great features include simple installation (so simple that a handy homeowner can even handle), great price and excellent durability. Vinyl gutters are made from a kind of plastic called PVC plastic. PVC plastic resists scratches, rusting and more which is why vinyl gutters prove to be such an excellent product. The only reason why vinyl siding would not be the best option is if you live in an extreme climate with very hot temperatures, heavy rains or extreme cold. This is because the gutters could, (in extreme situations) break apart.  Extreme weather or heavy rain could also cause warping or for the gutter to bend, meaning that the climate you live in will play a significant deciding factor in your gutter choice.

  • Galvanized steel gutters- most economical gutter type, they are very strong and sustain damage well. Steel gutters are a popular choice for homeowners because they are very durable and are one of the most cost effective gutter choices. The most popular steel gutter types are galvanized steel gutters as they are the most economical with their price ranging from $4 to $8 per linear foot installed. Below you will read some of the fantastic benefits to steel gutters.

  • Stainless steel gutters- these are popular because they maintain their sheen and are also strong. Stainless steel is the universal name for a number of different steels used primarily for their anti-corrosive element. Stainless steel has been developed to resist a number of corrosive environments which is why they make such a great gutter material. The anti-corrosive qualities in stainless steel gutters make them remain literally- stainless for many years! The lifespan on these gutters is super long; you won't be replacing these gutters for decades!

  • Copper gutters- Will never rust or rot and are low maintenance but can be pricey. Copper gutters can add elegance and sophistication to your home while serving a great functional purpose. There are some really fantastic qualities to copper gutters making them one of the strongest and long lasting gutters around.  The downside to copper gutters:  They are expensive!  The genuine copper coating in the gutters is what makes them expensive.  Copper gutters usually range in cost between $800- $2000 for 5 inch half round gutters. Copper gutters are also not one of those gutters that you can install on your own, so keep in mind that you will need to use a professional installers for this type of gutters. The other disadvantage to copper gutters (which can be easily prevented) is oxidation.  Oxidation is a process that occurs with copper by which the copper turns green.  This can be prevented by applying a sealant which will work to keep the gutters shiny and in their original color.

Gutters may not be glamorous, but they serve an extremely important function. Gutters direct rainwater to an area where run-off damage won't be a concern. They ensure that water flows away from basements, walkways, and patios. By doing this, gutters keep your house dry and protect your siding, windows, and foundation from disastrous water damage.

Gutters are available in a half round, "U" shape style, or the "K" style gutter, which have a front that is vaguely reminiscent of the letter "K." The difference sizes gutters come in are 4", 5", or 6" in diameter; 5" K-style are probably the most common gutters used today.

A lot of care goes into rain gutters, but they are worth the trouble because of the protection they bring to your home. You should be prepared to clean your gutter system at last twice each year. Another way to protect your gutters from clogging with leaves is to install leaf guard. This can also be done by our gutter contractor.
